She Realized She Was Grieving the Problems She Wished She Had

· By Anjali Prakash

A mother whose teenagers manage chronic illness listens to a friend worry about college portfolios and realizes she is grieving the ordinary problems she wished were hers instead, a glimpse into how invisible caregiver burden can feel.

A mother was talking with a friend about her teenage daughter.

She was worried about college. Her daughter loved art, and she wanted to help her build a stronger portfolio. Should she volunteer somewhere? Start a project? Find an interesting extracurricular that would make her application stand out?

They were reasonable questions. Loving-parent questions.

On the other side of the video call sat another mother who could probably help. She had been an A student herself. She knew how to think about these things. But she was also triggered.

“I would give almost anything for this to be my problem.”

Her teenagers weren’t building résumés. Some days, just getting through school was the accomplishment. Their lives revolved around doctors, therapies, medications, panicking over forgotten refills, and trying to keep fragile bodies and minds functioning.

Eventually, she said it out loud. Not angrily. Just truthfully.

Then she turned the camera toward the collection of prescription bottles sitting nearby. All the medications her children needed simply to get through an ordinary day.

A kitchen counter lined with prescription pill bottles, medicine droppers, and a daily pill organizer, the medications a chronically ill teenager needs to get through an ordinary day.

She wasn’t trying to create guilt. She wanted her friend to have a glimpse into another version of parenting and, maybe, to help herself feel seen too. Sometimes the hardest part is simply feeling like the people around you don’t fully understand the life you’re living.

It is one reason caregiver burden matters so much to us at MySuperbills. If there is one small piece of that burden we can take off your plate, reach out. We are still growing, but this is exactly why we exist.
