The Cognitive Load of Autism Parenting and Then Insurance
A mother raising an autistic child describes the exhaustion of parenting layered onto out-of-network insurance paperwork, and how submitting his superbills through MySuperbills became one task she no longer had to carry alone.
By the end of the day, she was tired in a very particular way.
She had spent hours listening carefully to her autistic child, asking him to repeat himself, trying to understand what he needed, and helping him navigate situations that were already overwhelming for him. Everyday conversation required her full attention, a lot of patience, and constant decoding. Raising a child who struggles to express his needs can be an incredibly demanding job for a parent.
So by the time her child went to bed, her brain was done. And then there was the superbill.
She felt too cross-eyed to tackle the PDF attachment, navigate her insurance portal, and figure out the reimbursement process. Was this even the right superbill? Had she already submitted this one? Was this the claim that had been denied, or the one they had asked her to resubmit? Had she filled out the claim form correctly this time?
None of it was impossible. She probably could have figured it out. But sometimes making a healthcare task easier isn’t about solving something a patient can’t do. It’s about taking one more thing off a parent’s cognitive load when they’ve already used up so much of themselves for the day and tomorrow will require them to do it all again.
She found MySuperbills through the provider her son works with and later called me to say she had submitted all of his summer bills in one go.
Because it was that easy.
