Meet Anjali Prakash: the story behind MySuperbills

· By Lorena Tomás

Anjali Prakash founded MySuperbills after navigating out-of-network reimbursement for her own children. She studied computer science and built a long career in financial sales, spending more than two decades at one of the largest banks in the world, then turned what she had learned about claims, codes, and deductibles into a service for other families.

I have had the privilege of watching Anjali Prakash transform one of the most difficult chapters of her life into a form of support for families she may never meet. Before MySuperbills, she studied computer science and built a long and successful career in financial sales, spending more than two decades at one of the largest banks in the world.

A challenge no professional experience prepares you for

Motherhood brought a challenge no professional experience could prepare her for. When her twins began showing needs that were difficult to understand, reaching the right diagnosis was neither quick nor simple. Finding the right specialists was only the beginning. She also had to learn what the plan covered, which providers were in network, what happened when the right one was not, and what had to be submitted and by when.

Anjali was the person responsible for protecting both her children’s access to care and her family’s financial stability. She faced an impossible kind of choice: learn the rules well enough to keep moving, or risk watching the cost and complexity of the system narrow the care available to her children.

Learning a language no one expects to need

So she learned. She learned the difference between a superbill and a claim. She learned diagnosis codes, procedure codes, allowed amounts, deductibles… a language most people never expect to need, at precisely the moment when a mother’s attention should have been reserved for her children.

There is a particular injustice in asking people to become administrative experts while they are frightened, exhausted, and trying to make decisions about care. Anjali understood that injustice not as an abstract market problem, but as a daily reality.

MySuperbills grew from the belief that this burden should not simply be accepted. Families may still need to make difficult decisions, and no service can control what an insurer ultimately covers or pays. But people should not lose access to benefits because the process was too confusing, too fragmented, or too exhausting to complete.

A rare kind of strength

In the time I have spent working closely with Anjali, I have come to recognize a rare kind of strength in her. She is capable of making difficult decisions, carrying enormous responsibility, and moving forward when there is no easy or certain path. Yet none of this has made her harder. She has preserved a genuine tenderness and a sense of humor that remain present even when the circumstances demand everything from her. Life gave Anjali many reasons to become guarded. Instead, she chose to become more available to others.

The date the company was founded

The date MySuperbills entered the world carries a meaning few people know. It marked the anniversary of the loss of Anjali’s brother, who lost his life after facing profound mental health challenges without receiving the support he needed.

Anjali did not choose that day as a marketing symbol. She chose it as a private act of remembrance and purpose. A way of honoring a life she loved by building something intended to help other families feel less alone while searching for care.

Some dates ask us only to remember. Others invite us to transform remembrance into responsibility. For Anjali, this one became both.

Why her story matters

Perhaps this is what moves me most about her story. Some experiences close people off. Anjali allowed hers to deepen her capacity to care. MySuperbills was born from difficulty, but it is being built through love, clarity, courage, and the quiet conviction that what was painfully difficult for one family should not remain difficult for every family that follows.

She is building MySuperbills with everything she has learned and, in many ways, with everything she has. Not because the journey has been easy, but because she believes families deserve an easier one.
