I Thought $300 for a Therapist Meant We Had to Walk Away

· By MySuperbills Guest

A parent nearly turned down a $300-a-session therapist for her son until out-of-network benefits brought the real cost to about $100 a session, with MySuperbills handling the monthly reimbursement claims.

This story was shared by a MySuperbills user who asked to stay anonymous.

His current therapist at school was wonderful, but she just wasn’t the right fit for what he needed anymore. He needed someone who really understood PTSD, LGBTQ teens, and his Latino identity.

We finally found someone he connected with. But the fee was $300 a session, she didn’t accept insurance, and he needed therapy every week instead of every other week.

My stomach dropped. But we took him anyway.

Then I found out that our health insurance had out-of-network benefits. After reimbursement, that $300 session would cost us about $100.

That changed the math.

Thankfully, the price tag would not be the reason my son couldn’t get the mental health support he needed.

I’m incredibly grateful we have out-of-network benefits. And I’m grateful I can submit the claims to MySuperbills once a month and be done with it.
